What Is Forex Trading?

Forex trading, short for foreign exchange trading, is the buying and selling of one currency against another with the aim of profiting from changes in their relative value. It is the largest financial market in the world, with trillions of dollars changing hands every single day.

How Currency Pairs Work

Currencies are always traded in pairs, such as EUR/USD (the Euro against the US Dollar) or GBP/USD (the British Pound against the US Dollar). If you believe the Euro will strengthen against the Dollar, you would buy EUR/USD. If it moves in your favour, you profit; if it moves against you, you lose money.

Why People Trade Forex

  • The market is open 24 hours a day, five days a week, fitting around a normal job or school schedule.
  • Most brokers allow you to start with a very small deposit, sometimes as little as $5.
  • Leverage lets you control a larger position with a smaller amount of capital — though this cuts both ways and significantly increases risk.

  3. Practise on a free demo account for several weeks using virtual funds before going live.
  4. Start small with real money and only after you are comfortable with your strategy on demo.
  5. Manage risk on every single trade using stop losses and sensible position sizing.
  6. Keep learning. Markets evolve, and consistent traders are the ones who treat education as ongoing.
